This board is a walnut and purpleheart end grain construction. End grain boards are easier on your knives than edge grain, and hide cut marks a little better because you are cutting with the grain and not across it. The grain pattern of each board is unique because each tree is unique. We go through painstaking steps on each one of these boards to give you something that we are sure you will treasure. Boards are not glued at random, but they are carefully aligned and chosen.
The walnut that we use for the San Antonio series comes from a local supplier that only sells boards that have not been steamed. Most furniture and cabinet builders want a more uniform dark piece of walnut so they steam the wood to hide the lighter colored sapwood. We think the variability is what makes the boards special, so we only use walnut that hasn’t been steamed. We also hand pick each board that we will be using for the cutting boards. It costs us more to do it this way, but we think the results are worth it.
This board is made with natural woods and sealed with all natural and food grade oils and waxes. No stains or varnishes are ever used or applied to any of our products. The color you see is the natural beauty of the wood. For more information on caring for wooden cutting boards please read the Care and Maintenance section on this site.
